This comedy is as black as the ace of spades, with Beria issuing detailed orders about the manner of the executions being carried out, and with an understandable air of paranoia amongst the scheming Politburo plotters, any of whom was at risk of being denounced and shipped off to Siberia or worse. The film has not gone down well in Russia, where the Ministry Of Culture has apparently considered banning it, an act worthy of Stalin himself.

Lee Weathers (played by Kate Mara) is a corporate risk assessment analyst, which doesn’t sound a promising job for an action thriller until you realise that this is Hollywood, where considerable latitude to is given to job descriptions in big companies. She is tasked by her boss (played by Brian Cox) to investigate unsettling events at an isolated scientific laboratory where Dr Simon Ziegler (Toby Jones) and Dr Lui Cheng (Michelle Yeoh) and running an experiment into creating artificial life.

After watching the fun Eddie the Eagle the other day, I thought I’d give another Olympic biopic a go. The story of Jesse Owens is one of the rise of an impressive athlete who had to endure and fight racism at home in the US to make it to the 1936 Berlin Olympics. 1936 may have been before WWII, but the nazi regime was already well established including their Racial Cleansing policies.
