Catrin Cole (played by Gemma Arterton) appears married to a handsome but struggling artist/painter Ellis Cole (Jack Huston), and against his wishes decides to get a job in order to shore up the couple’s frail finances. She is hired as a writer to help the established writing team. Catrin is sent to investigate a potentially stirring tale of a pair of twin sisters who take their drink father’s boat to Dunkirk to help in the rescue, and concludes that, despite some serious issues, the material may make a flagship propaganda film.

Still Life (8/10)

The low budget British film Still Life is about as far as it is possible to get from the Hollywood blockbuster. Eddie Marsan plays John May, a quiet office worker for a local council in London. For 22 years he has been doing the unusual job of trying to trace relatives of people that die in the borough without any immediate family, and to make their funeral arrangements.

Morgan Matthews’ low budget film follows a teenage boy, Nathan Ellis, who is autistic but has considerable talent for mathematics.

This is a surprisingly engaging little film, which probably cost about 1% of an X Men blockbuster but is more worthy of your time.
