Director Christoper Nolan lets us experience ‘Dunkirk’ by means of three storylines: one on land, one in the air, and one on the sea. With dialogue being minimal, it is all about the combination of visuals and Hans Zimmer’s nerve-wracking score to tell the story. And that works very well.
I saw the first Now You See Me movie on a plane and was pleasantly suprised. Sure it was a bit silly but it was also just good fun and had a cast-with-chemistry and enough plot to keep you interested. A bit of a guilty pleasure if you will.
Now You See Me 2 brings more of everything – more action, more plot, more twists, and a couple new characters.
The latest movie of Paolo Sorrentino was shot by the same director of photography as his previous movie La Grande Belezza. And the movie is (mostly) beautifully shot indeed. Set in an exclusive sanatorium in the Swiss Alps, Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel observe the other guests as well as their own lives and the follies of their youth, most of which they are too old for to accurately remember.
Another comic-book adaptation? Yep. A Very Stylish One too! The plot is not all that relevant but here you go: street kid gets recruited into secret spy agency Kingsman and things happen.
It is at heart a grand spoof of the old Bond movies from Roger Moore’s days – but updated to today’s standards of action and visual spectacle – or maybe even setting some new standards at that.
It has been a long while since there has been a science fiction movie with this level of grand ambitions. The Director, Christopher Nolan, lists various movies that have inspired him for Interstellar, including Metropolis, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner. For me the more obvious comparison however is with Contact.
